Design and Detail
Design Studies
Our designers worked together with the engineering team to rethink and rearrange the internal components and develop forms that would ensure the lock looked less bulky. Initial foam models were made to test overall volume and appearance and placement of interaction areas. Multiple models were tested to arrive at the final lock body and handle design.
Design for Usability
Driven by technology, Spacetek provides keyless convenience to the user, making sure the user no longer has to spend time searching for their keys. The clean interface design, makes interaction with the lock easy. The numeric keypad illuminates when the user touches the keypad area and disappears when the keypad is not in use. Multiple trials were taken to decide the colour and quality of light that illuminates the numbers and icons. A soft diffused light was used to create a pleasant appearance that is visible both in bright sunlight as well as at night. The red alarm icons illuminate with unique beeping sounds until the issue is rectified.
Minimalistic Design
A minimalist and sleek form, designed to create a floating feel on the door, blends in and complements each space’s unique style. The simple design with its monochromatic color scheme, clearly defines points of interaction, helping the user to understand and operate the lock with ease.
Our Co-creation strategies help us bring together specialists from each field to collaboratively participate in the product development process and bring out the most valuable outcome for the client. We worked together with embedded system experts to develop a system that enhances and integrates the desired functions.
360° Biometric Authentication
The 360 degree fingerprint scanner with an all round detectable pad, allows the user to orient their finger in any manner to authenticate access. No more worry about forgotten pincodes, the user can quickly and conveniently scan their fingerprint to unlock the door. The well-defined edges around the fingerprint scanner accentuate the interaction area and help the user to easily locate and place their finger on the scanner.
Emergency Charging
A portable charger can be used to conveniently charge the lock using the connector provided at the bottom of the product incase the battery is completely discharged after long days of inactivity. The refresh button at the bottom of the product can be pressed to refresh display in case of any operation glitches.
User Testing
The prototype was tested with users for feedback with different scenarios, to test overall lock performance and functionality.
Emergency Key
The mechanical key can be used incase the door lock malfunctions and does not accept the correct pincode or fingerprint methods. The distinct brass key with stamped patterns is designed to ensure comfortable usage.
Concealed Keyhole
An elastomer cap seamlessly integrates with the front fascia of the lock and conceals the keyhole.
Remote Access
The simple and intuitive design of the remote lets the user’s thumb sit comfortably in the depression to unlock the door. When pressed, there is a tactile feedback and a small indicator on the top lights up as visual feedback. The user can operate the remote from a distance of 15-20 ft, ensuring hassle free unlocking whenever needed.
The smooth rounded edges of the remote make it comfortable to hold. Multiple forms were tested with users to arrive at the most comfortable design. The two-part injection moulded remote can be easily unscrewed to replace batteries.
VDP Module
For ease of operation, Spacetek is also compatible with video door phones. The VDP module seamlessly connects the video door phone to the lock, allowing the user to operate the lock from the location of the video door phone without having to go to the door. The design of the VDP module also follows the simple and elegant design language of the lock body.
Branding and Structural Packaging Design
For ease of operation, Spacetek is also compatible with video door phones. The VDP module seamlessly connects the video door phone to the lock, allowing the user to operate the lock from the location of the video door phone without having to go to the door. The design of the VDP module also follows the simple and elegant design language of the lock body.
Structural Packaging
The compact structural design ensures the lock body is well cushioned during transportation and delivery and remains intact. The spacing and placement of the parts ensures there is no friction or scratches to the components. Designed for ease of handling, the packages are designed to have double layered cardboard folds on all four sides, providing strength to the carton and double-protection to the product inside.

Concept Development
The concept was tested at each stage to validate functionality, test long-term operation under different conditions and to ensure a foolproof and easy assembly. Co-creation
Prototyping
Aesthetic prototypes were created in machined HIPS to verify that the concept is engineered accurately. The protototypes were then developed into vacuum casted functional prototypes for user testing and electronic testing of all mechanical and electrical components.
Mechanism Testing
Proof of Concept testing was done in the initial phase on the deadbolt mechanism developed inhouse, to test gear rotation using a motor.
Electronics Testing
CapSense technology was used to test connection and PCB feedback in the initial prototype. Current consumption tests and battery-life tests were also conducted to ensure a long-lasting and functional product. Burning chamber test was carried out to test the functioning of lock electronics at both low and high temperatures.
